Professor Ettore Marubini passed away on July 22, at 88 years of age. He was Professor of Medical Statistics at the University of Milan from 1978 to 2003 (and Emeritus Professor after his retirement). His work covered many different areas, from auxology to design of experiments and ANOVA and survival analysis. His applications covered many areas of medical and basic research in pediatrics, oncology and cardiology, especially. He was very active at the national level, and many of the Italian medical statisticians were his students or were influenced by his scientific work. He was also renowned at the international level and very active in the IBS. He was President of the Italian Region from 1992 to 1995. We are indebted to him, as a Region, for his passion for medical statistics, his work to promote it and to attract in the Society various generations of young biostatisticians across many years.
